The Groundwater Project Rubric

Case Abstract:

The Doe family lives in Limestone, on Hiltop Road, in a little neighborhood called Oak Dale Acres. They live next to the Limestone schools near the intersection of 5000 North and 1500 West. John and Jane’s daughter, Janet, has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Her friend, Amy Wilson, was diagnosed with leukemia and passed a few years later. She has contracted leukemia. John and Jane Doe believe that their child has contracted cancer due to a chemical spill that occurred near their home. They are suing Shell for damages and expenses that they feel are a result of this petroleum contamination of the groundwater and the well that supplies water to the house that the girls played in and drank from. The house is now connected to Kankakee City water as a result of a previous lawsuit.

  • include a jury foreman

Bailiff

John Doe

Jane Doe

Janet Doe

Amy Wilson

Shell Representative (District manager)

* This is a make believe case study. These people and these situations do not really exist.

Lawyers

Prosecution goals and duties:

  • Prove that Shell is solely responsible for causing Janet to contract colon cancer.
  • Direct the researchers if they need direction.
  • Organize the research.
  • Identify and label evidence for trial.
  • Design a plan of attack.
  • Prepare questions for every possible witness.
  • Prepare information to counter possible information presented by the defense.
  • Nothing can be presented if you do not valid documentation to back it up.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Defense goals and duties:

  • Prove that anything else could have been responsible for causing Janet to contract colon cancer.
  • Direct the researchers if they need direction.
  • Organize the research.
  • Identify and label evidence for trial.
  • Design a plan of attack.
  • Prepare questions for every possible witness.
  • Prepare information to counter possible information presented by the prosecution.
  • Nothing can be presented if you do not valid documentation to back it up.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Doctor (oncologist)

Prosecution goals and duties:

  • Identify chemicals that could have caused cancer that can be found in petroleum.
  • Know what cancer is and how it can be contracted.
  • Explain what types of activities would have exposed Janet to carcinogenic compounds.
  • What treatment would be required to treat Janet’s cancer?
  • Explain what cancer can do to the human body.
  • Know what types of cancer would generally result from petroleum contamination.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Defense goals and duties:

  • Identify other chemicals that could have caused cancer that can be found in the area.
  • Know what cancer is and how it can be contracted.
  • Explain what types of activities would have exposed Janet to these other carcinogenic compounds.
  • What treatment would be required to treat Janet’s cancer?
  • Explain what cancer can do to the human body.
  • Know what types of cancer would generally result from petroleum contamination.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Researchers

Prosecution and Defense goals and duties:

  • Identify the chemicals found in petroleum that can cause cancer.
  • Research the geology of the area.
  • Find paper evidence of the spill and when it happened.
  • Find out how the spill happened.
  • Find out how much contaminant was spilled.
  • Identify chemicals that can cause cancer.
  • Research information of cancer.
  • Research how water travels through the ground.
  • Research anything that needs to be researched for trial.
  • PREPARE PAPER DOCUMENTATION FOR EVIDENCE. (as proof)
  • Acquire materials needed for trial.
  • Design presentation materials needed for trial.

Health Department Representative

Prosecution and Defense goals and duties:

  • Know about the health concerns that would result from a petroleum spill.
  • Have evidence of safety codes.
  • Know what laws would pertain to this case.
  • Have record of similar cases and how they have turned out.

* Research how a trial should be run and be ready to explain the process to the class.

Civil Engineer

Prosecution and Defense goals and duties:

  • Know how a petroleum pipeline is constructed.
  • Know all the ways a pipeline could fail and leak.
  • Know what can cause this kind of failure to happen.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Conservationist

  • Know how contamination effects the environment.
  • Know how contamination effects the plants and animals of an area.
  • Know the signs of contamination and how the area could be cleaned.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Scientist (toxicologist)

Prosecution goals and duties:

  • Know what chemicals are found in petroleum.
  • Know which compounds are carcinogenic.
  • Know how these chemicals break down and how long they take to break down.
  • Know the chemical structure of the compounds.
  • Know the concentration of the chemical that makes it carcinogenic.
  • Know what other chemicals can cause cancer.
  • Know what concentration of these chemicals is carcinogenic.
  • Know where these chemicals can come from.
  • HELP RESEARCH WHEN MATERIAL IS COVERED

Defense goals and duties:

  • Know what chemicals are found in petroleum.
